Carone's Breef Curtains History

The first and curtains probably date from the time when man lived in caves. To minimize the action of natural elements (rain and cold) and the curiosity of predators, primitive man covered the entries from his cave with animal skins.

The first homes built by man with stone and wood, used also curtains to cover windows and doors as protection against insects, dust and bad weather.

With the evolution of societies, curtains have been given an ornamental value to doors and windows. The great palaces of the nobility were adorned with curtains of velvet, silk and organdy. In the rooms of European palaces, curtains of cotton or linen, were attach to beds with poles, rods and eyelet curtains.

In the east, blinds made of colored glass or bamboo, hunged vertically, had mysticism and lent fascination to the rooms. However the curtains began to incorporate rods to pull the curtains. As time went on many styles of curtains and drapes, curtain folds, pleated curtains, curtain fringes, beaded curtains, etc.. Diversification affected also the type of curtain accessories used for its implementation: poles, rods, valances, eyelets and decorative moldings. The first curtain poles and rods were made of wood (oak or birch), and after with metal. Bamboo blinds are another popular window treatment used in many enclosed courtyards, sun rooms and for special effects in bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens. Throughout history, curtain and drapery remained as an essential element to any decor.

Despite the different styles, trends and innovations in design, curtains continue to serve the purposes for which they were originally intended: for protection against excessive exposure to sun, light, dust, humidity and cold.
